Get the Glow Without the Sun Damage: Self-Tanning Tips from a Suffolk Beauty Therapist

There’s something about a sun-kissed glow that just makes you feel better, more confident, healthier, and ready for anything. But at this time of year, baking in the sun isn’t ideal (and it’s definitely not skin-friendly). Whether you’re heading to a summer party, on holiday, or just want to feel your best, achieving a faux glow is one of the easiest ways to boost your mood without damaging your skin. Here are my Self-Tanning Tips.
As a Suffolk-based makeup artist and beauty therapist, here are my honest, tried-and-tested tips for getting a flawless tan minus the UV exposure.
Finding the Right Tan for You
There are so many types of tanning formulas out there, and honestly, it’s a bit of trial and error. You’ve got mousses (my favourite!), body lotions, mists, instant tans, and gradual options so how do you choose?
A quick breakdown:
-
Mousse – My personal go-to. Easy to apply and gives a deeper colour.
-
Mist – Lightweight and great for layering.
-
Gradual Tan – Perfect for beginners or those after a subtle glow.
-
Instant Tan – Good for a quick fix; washes off if needed.
If you’re just starting out, I’d recommend a gradual tan you can build it up slowly and see how you like the tone. Or try an instant tan lotion that you can wash off if it’s not quite right or something goes wrong.
If you’re more experienced, I’d say go for the old-school mousses or the newer transparent mists, they offer a longer-lasting glow and better control.
Consider Your Timing
My next self tanning tip to think about is how long you’ve got to let your tan develop.
-
Need something quick? There are speedy formulas that develop in under 2 hours. These are my favourite because I don’t like walking around with tan on all day, but the colour does tend to be lighter.
-
Want that ‘just back from the Caribbean’ glow? Go for overnight or gradual tanners. They take longer but give a deeper result and are worth it if you’re not in a rush.
A Few of My Favourite Products
I’ve tried a fair few self-tanners, and here are the ones I keep coming back to:
St Tropez Self Tan Purity Bronzing Water Mousse
This white mousse goes on clear, so no messy colour guide. Just be extra careful to cover all areas, it’s easy to miss a spot when you can’t see where you’ve been!
St Tropez Express Tan Mousse
My absolute favourite when I’m dishing out self tanning tips! This one has a colour guide, so you can see where it’s going, and it develops in 1–3 hours depending on how dark you want your tan. I even use it on my face (which I usually avoid with tanners) because it’s such a quick fix. You’ll often find me post-dinner, wrapped in a blanket on the sofa, letting it develop before bed.
Bondi Sands Technicolor 1 Hour Express
I haven’t tried this one yet, but it’s next on my list! It has great reviews and is designed for colour correction, I’ll update you once I’ve given it a go.
Application Tips (from Experience!)
Wear loose, dark clothing while your tan develops it’ll help prevent lines or streaks. Black is best, especially if you’re using a formula with a colour guide. Avoid bras and tight underwear too, they can mark the skin and leave lines
Prep Is Everything
As I always say: Prep is the key to applying any tan.
-
Shave or wax 24–48 hours beforehand to avoid that “dark pore” look.
-
Exfoliate the day before to get rid of dry skin and help the tan go on smoothly.
-
Moisturise dry areas (elbows, knees, ankles) lightly before applying.
-
Use a tanning mitt for even, streak-free application.
A good self-tan should last up to 7–10 days, depending on how well you prep and care for your skin.
